After a week of learning Max/Msp, I have decided to use this software to create a sound interaction device. Despite this software being quite difficult to get the hang of.
Currently, I have learned how to make an Ambient Additive Synth Generator according to tutorials on YouTube, and use a camera for motion detection, extracting moving pixels in the camera and using them for sound interaction.
In the future, I want to learn how to visualize my voice with Max/Msp and link it with the footage captured by my camera. I plan to display these images on my CRT TV.
When I truly encounter or obtain something,
recognizing its essence and no longer being captivated by its appearance,
disenchantment occurs.
At the heart of "Growth is a process of disenchantment with the world" lies my own intimate journey, paralleling the narrative arc of personal growth, introspection, and the inevitable feeling of disenchantment that accompanies the transition from youth into adulthood. Inspired profoundly by my story "High Hopes," in which characters find themselves trapped within a metaphorical space, navigating their inner worlds by interacting with their surrounding environment, I see a reflection of my own life experiences. This story serves as a deep metaphor for my journey, capturing the essence of isolation, introspection, and the gradual disenchantment with objects and ideals once perceived with great admiration. In creating this project, I aim to encapsulate the emotional and psychological intricacies of this journey, transforming them into an immersive auditory experience that mirrors the complex layers of human emotions and the inevitable quest for understanding and meaning.
"Growth is a process of disenchantment with the world" reimagines the concept of disenchantment through the medium of sound, inviting participants to explore a space where sounds not only fill the air but also serve as vessels for emotion, meaning, and transformation. This auditory environment is designed to be interactive, allowing visitors to engage with and alter the soundscape, thereby participating in the act of disenchantment itself. The sounds within this space will range from the mundane to the abstract, each carefully chosen to represent different aspects of the artist's journey and the broader human experience of shifting perceptions.
Participants will encounter sounds that at first seem alluring, only to discover that through manipulation and interaction, these sounds reveal their true essence, stripped of any initial enchantment. This process is not just about disillusionment but also about gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation for the inherent qualities of these sounds, mirroring the artist's personal journey of moving beyond surface-level allure to recognize the underlying reality of the world around them.
I still want my theme to revolve around the keyword "disenchantment," but I think the programs I am currently making with Max/Msp and my plans for the future are taking this work further and further away from the theme of disenchantment. It seems to lean more towards a process of being observed and recording audience behavior. I think if I want to continue creating around the theme of disenchantment, I might need to spend more time on the visual aspect. This is the most difficult part of the work: how to reasonably visualize the abstract process of disenchantment.
I think the process of disenchantment is a transition from fantasy to reality, like a dreamy colorful bubble being burst. I believe the sound in my installation does indeed reflect the dreamy effect, but it also needs to be manifested visually in terms of this transformation.
